Since pre-Hispanic times, the feathers of exotic birds have been used to create ornamental garments for high hierarchies. Over time, this technique has also been used in the elaboration of religious paintings, colonial and revolutionary motifs, landscapes and other designs, standing out for the richness of colors provided by the plumage. The process consists of patiently covering the previously traced drawings with wax and cut feathers, resulting in authentic works of art. This technique is widely recognized in the region of Tlalpujahua and has an important current presence in the city of Morelia.

In Michoacán there is a great variety of textiles which, although they tend to be very similar, have particular characteristics according to the place where they were made. The differences between them lie mainly in the type of embroidery, the colors used and the figures implemented in the embroidery or the finishing of the rapacejos (finishing or tips of the overflows).

In the original cultures of Mesoamerica, feathers were a symbol of power. The ethnic groups of the pre-Hispanic world used them to create plumes, fans, decorate the shields of warriors and adorn the clothing of priests and rulers.
